ABOUT NICE

Hi, my name is Susan Yu. I am a full time IT Consultant and a mother of 2 daughters, 13 and 8. I came from Hong Kong but my parents came from Beijing. The idea of NICE origins from my desire to find a quality Chinese school for my children in Sydney.

I, like most Chinese parents here, would like my children able to master basic Chinese (i.e. able to speak, communicate, read and write) to elementary level. I sent my older daughter to various Chinese schools in North Shore since she was 5 years old until she was 10. She is a very good and conforming girl and she managed. However, when I tried to do the same thing to my 5 year old, she rebelled. It reached a point when she would cry and scream every time I forced her to study Chinese and go to Chinese class. I have to find a different way. That's when I started researching on language teaching in foreign countries without the home environment. After much research and study, I finally put together a format and tried it out 2 years ago on my 6 year old by forming this first "Student Centered Language Class using immersion technique".

The method is based on a very mature model of ESL (English as Second Language) discipline and adapted it in teaching Chinese. It is student-centred learning through fun and activities.

Our first class was a complete success, it took 2 classes to get my "previously chinese class traumatised" 6 year old daughter from hating Chinese class to enjoying it. The other children in the classes adapt from lesson one because they were not traumatised like mine. It is a happy and stimulating class environment, the children learnt all aspects Chinese at a faster pace than the traditional conventional community Chinese Class. However, from term 3 onward, Children will have light home work. Due to the fact that Chinese is only learned 2 hours a week in a totally English Speaking environment, we would like to progressively develop adaptive method to let Children to be able to learn Mandarin effectively. After my experience with the new way of teaching Chinese, I felt that I should have done it earlier with my older daughter instead of letting her tolerate a form of Chinese eudcation that is not suitable for Australian environment.

Anyway, I hope you understand the amount of thoughts and love put into the design of these Chinese classes. I hope this is just the beginning. The classes will evolve as we receive more feedback and improve. We are continously improving our curriculum and teaching method to fit our philosophy of learning Chinese in a fun way. We would like to introduce the best way of learning Chinese to Australia. Our focus is on enjoyment and literacy. We want to help to produce a generation of little Australians who can truely develop Chinese literacy.
